r/gamedesign on Reddit: Online Programs for Game Design

16 votes, 21 comments. Does anyone have any recommendations or personal experience for a college that offers good, online courses, for game design… For topics related to the design of games for interactive entertainment systems - video games, board games, tabletop RPGs, or any other type. /r/GameDesign is not a subreddit about general game development, nor is it a programming subreddit. Stuff that are small scale and isolated. You’ll be much better off with programming knowledge than actual game design knowledge.Game design degrees aren't generally recommended by people working in the game industry, largely because most of them aren't very good. Online courses are pretty much without exception in that category. There _are _well-regarded design programs out there, but they're at top schools and definitely not for-profit places like Full Sail. There’s a 5 course “move at your own pace” program on Coursera offered by CalArts that is supposed to take about 6 months to complete at 2 hours/week. It’s pretty insightful, and you get a certificate for completing it. Less expensive options would be the courses offered on Udemy. They’re usually around $12 per course for 10-40 hours of content. Then there’s YouTube, which I’m sure you’re aware of. There’s tons of great game design YouTubers that break down the core mechanics of games and game design fundamentals.
